Northeast Car Deliveries Jumped 27% — The Open Carriers Didn't Keep Up.

Northeast auto transport demand grew 27% in 2025, faster than any other U.S. region. Then 2026 brought $6.48 diesel in New England and a federal crackdown on non-domiciled CDLs. This guide shows why open carrier car shipping in the Northeast keeps getting pricier, and how to still get a truck.

October 20268 min read

In 2025, Super Dispatch tracked nearly 10 million vehicle moves across the U.S. Northeast deliveries grew 27%, faster than any other region. New Jersey jumped 48%. New York and Pennsylvania each climbed past 20%. The New York City to Hartford, Connecticut lane more than doubled.

Nobody counts car haulers by region. But every national supply number moved the wrong way in 2026. SGT’s market data shows carrier pay per mile up 22.8%, and car shipping cancellations caused by low rates went from 1.45% to 4.64% of bookings. New England diesel hit $6.48 a gallon the week of October 5 (DOE/EIA). So open carrier car shipping in the Northeast costs more right now, and a cheap quote is the one most likely to fall apart.

The lowest Northeast quote is usually the load carriers skip first. Compare verified quotes now, before the fall snowbird rush fills every open truck heading south.

What’s Squeezing Open Carrier Car Shipping in the Northeast?

Squeeze 1: Diesel Costs the Most in New England

New England paid $6.476 a gallon for diesel the week of October 5, per DOE/EIA data. The U.S. average was $6.199. The East Coast average was $5.951. That gap lands in your quote. Fuel is about 25% of a carrier’s cost structure, according to Super Dispatch CEO Matt Bradley. The national numbers aren’t much kinder. Diesel hit a record $6.53 the week of September 21, the highest in EIA’s weekly data. Super Dispatch’s tracker had auto transport at $1.20 per mile on June 7, against an $0.84 baseline before the Iran conflict. When diesel prices climb, car shipping quotes follow within weeks.

Squeeze 2: Fewer Drivers Cleared to Haul

Since March 16, 2026, the federal non-domiciled CDL rule limits those licenses to H-2A, H-2B and E-2 visa holders. Nearly 200,000 current holders can’t renew, per Overdrive. New York and Pennsylvania both drew FMCSA action. A federal audit of New York found 107 of 200 sampled licenses issued in violation, and DOT is withholding more than $73 million from the state. Pennsylvania has about 12,400 drivers holding unexpired non-domiciled CDLs and was ordered to stop issuing new ones pending review. On top of that, DOT says more than 26,000 drivers have been placed out of service for failing English proficiency checks since enforcement restarted in June 2025. Here’s the gap. No public dataset shows how many of those drivers hauled cars. So car hauler capacity in 2026 is shrinking by an amount nobody can pin down. We know the direction, but not the size.

Squeeze 3: Tolls and Tight Streets

The Pennsylvania Turnpike raised tolls 4% on January 4. The Class 5 tractor-trailer rate went from $23.16 to $24.12 with E-ZPass. The New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway rose 3% on January 1. Then comes Manhattan. NYC congestion pricing charges large trucks $21.60 per entry at peak hours with E-ZPass, and $5.40 overnight. It’s charged per entry, so two Manhattan stops cost twice. The streets are their own problem. NYC bans commercial vehicles from most parkways, including the Belt, Cross Island and Hutchinson River. Some parkway bridges clear just 6'11". That’s why a lot of New York car shipping pickups happen on a truck route or in a parking lot instead of at your curb.

How to Still Get an Open Carrier on a Northeast Route This Fall

You can’t change diesel prices or federal CDL rules. You can change how you book.

Book 3 to 4 weeks out

SGT’s 2026 data shows 38.5% of shipments now need a truck within 2 days of booking, up from 34.9%. Those rush loads fight over whatever trucks are left. If you’re wondering how far in advance to book car shipping out of the Northeast in fall, aim for 3 to 4 weeks. Waiting costs real money. Car shipping prices tend to climb as your pickup date gets closer. That goes double for snowbird car shipping from New York to Florida. Broker guides put the southbound rush at October through November, with peak surcharges of 15% to 25%. Those numbers come from brokers, so treat them as a rough range. The demand behind them is real, though. New York to Miami was the highest-grossing corridor on Super Dispatch’s platform in 2025, at $14.2 million in carrier revenue.

Be suspicious of the lowest quote

This is why car shipping is so expensive right now. In the first half of 2026, carrier pay per mile rose 22.8%, but consumer prices rose only 14.6% (SGT). Brokers covered the gap, and they can’t keep doing that forever. So when one quote lands far below the rest, it’s often priced under what carriers will accept. SGT found cancellations for exactly that reason went from 1.45% to 4.64% of bookings, and repricing after booking rose 46%. Many car shipping delays start right there, with an order sitting unclaimed until the price goes up. Car shipping prices in 2026 are higher for real reasons. A fair quote that gets a truck saves you more than a cheap one that gets canceled.

Make the pickup easy for a big rig

In New York City, offer to meet the driver on a designated truck route or in a large parking lot. Parkway bans and tight side streets (see Squeeze 3) can turn a 10-minute pickup into a missed window. New Jersey car shipping has its own edge. New Jersey deliveries grew 48% in 2025, so trucks already run there often. A pickup near the Turnpike or I-95 fits the routes they’re already driving better than a dead-end street does. Shipping 3 or more cars at once? Super Dispatch’s 2025 data shows the per-car cost drops roughly 30% once a load hits 3 vehicles. That figure comes mostly from dealer and auction loads, so a family move will likely save less.

Choose open or enclosed on purpose

Open car shipping is still the cheaper option by a wide margin. SGT puts the enclosed premium at 32.3%. That gap is why the enclosed share of shipments fell from 13.4% to 11.2% this year, and every one of those cars landed on an open truck. If your date is fixed and open trucks on your lane are booked solid, ask for an enclosed vehicle shipping quote too. Fewer people compete for those slots. I can’t promise it’ll be faster, but it’s worth one extra quote to find out.

Check the carrier before pickup day

With New York and Pennsylvania both under FMCSA action over CDLs, verify who’s actually showing up. Put the carrier’s DOT or MC number into FMCSA’s SAFER Company Snapshot and confirm the status says authorized. It takes 2 minutes.

What This Means for Your Northeast Shipment

Northeast auto transport demand grew faster than anywhere else in the country, and 2026 made every truck more expensive to run. Four things should change about how you book.

1.

Book 3 to 4 weeks ahead in fall. Open carrier car shipping in the Northeast fills up first on Florida-bound runs, so go earlier if you’re moving during the October to November snowbird rush .

2.

Treat the quote that’s far below the rest as a warning. Carriers skip low-paying loads first. That quote is the one most likely to come back higher or get canceled.

-1.

Plan a pickup spot a full-size car carrier can reach. In New York City, that usually means a truck route or a large lot, which beats a narrow side street.

4.

Check the carrier on SAFER before pickup day. Run the DOT or MC number and confirm the status says authorized.

What Northeast shippers keep asking before they book

Most of these come up the week someone gets a quote and wonders why the number moved. Short versions below, with sources where we have them.

How far ahead should I book an open carrier out of the Northeast in fall?

Three to four weeks out is a safe target for October and November, and earlier for Northeast-to-Florida runs. SGT's 2026 data shows 38.5% of shipments now need a truck within 2 days of booking, and those last-minute loads are the ones fighting over the fewest trucks. Booking early gives you more carriers to pick from.

Is enclosed transport easier to book than open right now?

It might be, but I can't promise it. SGT found the enclosed share of shipments fell from 13.4% to 11.2% as people traded down to open, so fewer customers are competing for enclosed slots. You'll pay about 32% more for it, and there are far fewer enclosed trucks on the road to begin with.

Will a car hauler come all the way to my street in New York City?

Often it can't. NYC bans commercial vehicles from most parkways, some with clearances as low as 6'11", and full-size trailers face extra limits off the main truck routes. Expect to meet the driver on a nearby truck route or in a large lot. Ask the carrier where before pickup day.

Does NYC congestion pricing get added to my quote?

It can. Large trucks pay $21.60 per entry into the Manhattan zone during peak hours with E-ZPass, and $5.40 overnight. Some carriers fold that into the price and some list it separately, so ask before you sign.

Why did my carrier cancel after I already booked?

Usually because the rate was too low to keep a truck interested. SGT's 2026 report shows cancellations for that reason went from 1.45% to 4.64% of all bookings. A quote far below the others is the one most likely to fall through.

Is shipping north cheaper than shipping south this time of year?

Usually, yes. In fall, Florida-bound trucks fill up while northbound trucks run lighter, so carriers price the southbound leg higher. In spring the flow flips. These patterns come from broker guides, not neutral data, so treat them as a rule of thumb.

How do I know the driver hauling my car is properly licensed?

Look up the carrier's DOT or MC number on FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot before pickup. New federal rules on non-domiciled CDLs and English proficiency enforcement have pulled thousands of drivers off the road this year, and New York and Pennsylvania are both under FMCSA review. A quick lookup takes two minutes.

Can I save money by shipping more than one car?

Yes, if you can fill part of a truck. Super Dispatch's 2025 data shows per-car cost drops roughly 30% once a load hits 3 vehicles. That number comes mostly from dealer and auction shipments, so a family moving 2 cars will likely save less.

Does my quote include a fuel surcharge?

Ask, because it isn't always clear. Fuel is about a quarter of a carrier's costs, and New England diesel was around $6.48 a gallon in early October. Some quotes build that in and some add it later as a surcharge.

Will Northeast prices drop after the snowbird rush ends?

Probably a little, but not back to 2025 levels. Demand dips after November, but the driver rules and high diesel don't go away with the season. EIA expects diesel to average about $4.50 in 2027, and I can't predict carrier rates beyond that.
